Match Report: Warwickshire Hawks 61 – 63 Nottingham Hoods (U14 Boys)

After a week away from league action, the Nottingham Hoods U14 Boys returned to the court refreshed and ready for battle. With several players back from recent absences, the team travelled to Warwickshire to face the Hawks — a side sitting just one place above them in the standings — determined to make a statement.

Q1 – Strong Start, Late Swing

The Hoods began brightly, opening the scoring from the free-throw line and following up with confident drives into the paint. Early defensive work was impressive too, as players tracked back quickly to prevent fast breaks. By the midway point of the quarter, the Hoods led 8–4 and were in control. However, a strong individual run from a Hawks player saw the hosts respond with seven unanswered points. Despite a determined reply and a buzzer-beating score, the Hoods ended the quarter trailing 14–19.

Q2 – Frustration at the Rim

The second quarter saw the Hoods move the ball well and create promising chances, but the finishing touch deserted them. Several shots rolled off the rim as the Hawks used their superior height to block and disrupt attacks. A well-taken three-pointer briefly reignited the visitors’ momentum, but missed layups proved costly. By halftime, the Hoods found themselves down 23–37 and in need of a spark.

Q3 – The Fightback Begins

The halftime team talk clearly had an impact. The Hoods came out with renewed energy, attacking at pace and finding their rhythm offensively. Baskets began to drop, and a confident three-pointer helped close the gap to 36–47 midway through the quarter. With clever rotations and persistent defence, the Hoods limited the Hawks’ scoring opportunities. A strong individual drive through the paint brought the score to 40–49 by the end of the period — the comeback was very much on.

Q4 – Heart, Hustle, and a Winning Finish

The final quarter belonged to the Hoods. Determined rebounding and relentless pressure saw them dominate possession, while sharp passing created open looks near the rim. As the Hawks struggled to contain the momentum, the score tightened to 52–54. A crucial three-pointer then gave the Hoods their first lead since the opening minutes. Despite late free throws from the Hawks, the Hoods held their nerve, scoring again and defending with real discipline to see out a thrilling 63–61 victory.

This hard-fought win — their second of the season — showcased the team’s growing chemistry, fighting spirit, and ability to turn adversity into opportunity. A superb effort from every player on the court.
